Description

Classic Bolga Ghana Basket

The classic round Bolga basket from Bolgatanga, northern Ghana. Hand-woven from elephant grass and finished with a leather-wrapped handle. A staple of Ghanaian craft markets for generations, used by mothers, farmers, traders, and now collectors and home decorators around the world.

How they are made

  1. Elephant grass is harvested at the end of the rainy season.
  2. The grass is dried in the sun, then split into thin strips by hand.
  3. The strips are twisted together into long thick strands.
  4. The basket is woven from the base upward, taking shape over 3 to 5 days of work.
  5. A leather strip is wrapped around the handle and stitched by hand to the rim.

One-of-a-kind

Every basket in this collection is unique. Each is named after a traditional Ghanaian day-name (Akan tradition). Pick the one whose photo speaks to you. Slight variations in weave tightness, color depth, and handle wrapping are part of the artistry, not defects.

Care

Dust with a soft brush. If the shape softens over time, mist with water and reshape by hand, then air dry. Keep out of long direct sun to preserve color.

Good for

Storage. Magazine holder. Yarn basket. Towel basket. Picnic carrier. Statement piece on a shelf. Anywhere you want a piece of Ghana in your home.
