Description

Oval Bolga Ghana Basket – Adwoa

This oval Bolga basket was hand-woven in Bolgatanga, northern Ghana, from locally-harvested elephant grass. The grass is twisted by hand into long strands, then woven into shape over several days. The handle is wrapped in leather and stitched by hand to the rim.

How it was made

  1. Elephant grass was harvested by hand at the end of the rainy season.
  2. The grass was dried in the sun for several days, then split into thin strips.
  3. Strips were twisted together into a long thick strand.
  4. The basket was woven from the base up, taking shape over 3 to 5 days of work.
  5. A leather strip was cut and wrapped around the handle, then stitched into place.

What makes this basket one-of-a-kind

Adwoa is one piece. There are similar Bolga baskets in our shop, but this exact basket will not be restocked. Small variations in the weave tightness and color are part of the artistry. The leather on the handle will soften with age and use.

Care

Dust with a soft brush. If the shape softens over time, mist with water and reshape by hand, then air dry. Keep out of long direct sun to preserve color.

Good for

Bread on the kitchen counter. Magazines by the couch. Yarn by your knitting chair. Towels in the bathroom. Anywhere you want texture and warmth.
